English Country Dance

English Country Dancing is one type of social dancing which was done in England from 1650 to 1850. Country dancing has origins back into the Middle Ages, when people came together and danced on village greens. These dances later moved into the ballroom and became elegant and ornate dances. The more energetic dances continued among the country folk - many with fast and noisy footwork and often with simple patterns.

Today's English country dances consist of dances from the ballroom to that of the pubs and many recently written in these particular styles. Many of the older dances were recorded by John Playford around 1700.

Country dancing is one of the predecessors to contra dancing.

There is always live music at our dances.
