FWA > Board FAQ > Trolls and Flamers
Replying to flames only encorages more flames. I've seen many a board that
has had that problem...so read
this.

Our policy on trolls and
flamers: If flamers give good arguments, the swearing and/or
insulting content is moderated out and their valid points remain.
However, they are messaged warnings and if the abuse goes on, they
will be banned. People who swear, SHOUT and abuse everyone will be
banned without notice. Swearing, however, is allowed if used
normally (i.e. not once every two words) as it is auto-moderated
out.
What to do: Remember,
trolls are self-haters. They are unable or unwilling to take
responsibility for their words or behavior, and that they have
brought a great deal of dislike upon themselves. They will try to
get rid of their venom and self-hatred by making other people worse,
and as a result everything they say about you is a reflection
of their feelings about themselves.
Because of their self-hate,
there is nothing that you can say that is as bad as what they
see in themselves. You can't hurt them, no matter how hard you try.
The only thing that relieves their self-hate is to see other people
in pain. If you let them get to you, that only encourages them.
That's why they're here in the first place. The point is that
flaming them hurts you more than it hurts them.
They are here to feed on our
pain. We don't have to give them that satisfaction. They stay only
as long as we feed them well. If we want them to go, all we have to
do is to stop feeding them. Recognize and understand that they are
here to hurt us - we don't have to accept that. We can let them
drown in their self-hate, simply by ignoring them. If you ignore
them, they will not be able to flame any more.
To beat
flamers and trolls use these five rules:
-
Don't read posts from or
about abusers;
-
Don't read email from or
about abusers;
-
If you can't resist
reading, don't respond;
-
If you can't resist
responding, do so by email - not by posting here;
-
If you are compelled to
post
a response, if you just can't stop yourself, then don't
worry, because nobody will read it.
