Determining the sizes of
the many Starfleet ships can be problematic. Occasionally,
Paramount provides an exact figure of the length of a given
vessel; other times, the size must be deduced from scenes of the
Star Trek shows themselves. I have made some approximations
regarding these sizes; the methods by which I determined them are
listed on this page.
Note: The ships in
the starship chart found in the back of the Star Trek
Encyclopedia are not to scale. The sizes of the
diagrams do not conform to the known lengths of the various
Starfleet ships.
Akira-class - 340 meters
I have constructed a separate page
dealing with the length of the Akira-class.
Ambassador-class - 526
meters
The size of the
Ambassador-class has been given by Paramount.
Constellation-class -
215 meters
The Constellation-class
saucer is structured differently than the saucers of contemporary
ships (Constitution-class, Miranda-class, etc.). Thus, this size
is just an approximation; the actual size may be somewhat
different. It could be anywhere from 200 meters to 330 meters.
Constitution-class - 289
meters
The size of the
Constitution-class has been given by Paramount.
Constitution-class (Type
II) - 305 meters
The size of the
Constitution-class (Type II) has been given by Paramount.
Defiant-class - 120
meters
I have constructed a separate page
dealing with the length of the Defiant-class.
Excelsior-class - 467
meters
The size of the
Excelsior-class has been given by Paramount.
Excelsior-class (Type
II) - 469 meters
There is a small
"fin" attached to the back of the engine nacelles of
the Excelsior-class (Type II). Thus, this type of ship is
approximately 2 meters longer than the standard Excelsior-class.
Galaxy-class - 642
meters
The size of the
Galaxy-class has been given by Paramount.
Intrepid-class - 344
meters
The size of the
Intrepid-class has been given by Paramount.
Miranda-class - 245
meters
The Miranda-class saucer
and engine nacelles are similar in structure to those of the
Constitution-class (Type II) saucer. Using these references, a
size of 245 meters can be determined. Previously, I has listed a
225 meter length for the Miranda-class; however, upon further
investigation, I have discovered that the smaller length is
incorrect.
Miranda-class (Type II)
- 245 meters
The length of this class
is presumably the same as that of the regular Miranda-class.
Miranda-class (Type III)
- 245 meters
The length of this class
is presumably the same as that of the regular Miranda-class.
Nebula-class - 440
meters
The length of the
Nebula-class can be deduced using the Galaxy-class saucer as a
reference.
New Orleans-class - 300
meters
This length is merely a
rough approximation. It was determined by scaling the decks and
the bridge to a height somewhat smaller than those of most
Starfleet ships (since the New Orleans is a warship). The true
length could be greater, depending on what methods are used to
evaluate the size, especially since no diagrams are available.
Norway-class - 335
meters
The Norway class appears
to be a few meters shorter than the Akira-class. At one point in Star
Trek: First Contact, a Norway passes just below an Akira, and
it appears to be slightly smaller (even when perspective and
depth perception are accounted for).

Nova-class - 160
meters
In "Equinox"
(VOY), we see two diagrams comparing Voyager and the Equinox. One
shows the Equinox to be about 140m, while the others show a
length of approximately 180m. Interestingly, the external views
of the ship imply a true length of the median of those numbers.

Oberth-class - 120
meters
The size of the
Oberth-class has been given by ILM.
Sovereign-class - 685
meters
The size of the
Sovereign-class has been given by Paramount and many other
"official" sources. However, the Star Trek
Encyclopedia uses a 680 meter length for this class of ship.
This is most likely just another error in that book.
Soyuz-class - 245 meters
The length of this class
is presumably the same as that of the Miranda-class.
Steamrunner-class - 355
meters
At one point in
"Favor the Bold" (DS9), an Akira-class and
Steamrunner-class ship are seen traveling within less than 50
meters of each other. The Steamrunner appears to be slightly
larger.

Yeager-class - 330
meters
The Yeager-class appears
to be slightly shorter than the Intrepid-class, assuming that the
saucers of the two ship types are the same, and the diagram in
the Deep Space Nine Technical Manual is correct.
