What is an imagemap?
An imagemap is an image that has one or several defined regions. The imagemap is typically displayed on a web page, and when a user clicks in one of the regions, he is transferred to another web page. Each region can link to a different web page.

Client-side or server-side?
There are two types of imagemaps. Client-side imagemaps include all the necessary information about the regions and the corresponding URLs. Server-side imagemaps only give information about where in the image the user clicked, and extra web server software is needed to process this information. Imagemaps created on this site are all client-side.

How are the regions defined?
There are four possible region definitions:
- Background: Covers the whole image.
- Rectangle: Defined by the upper left and lower right corners.
- Circle: Defined by the center and the radius.
- Polygon: Defined by a number of points connected by a line between them.

How are region overlaps treated?
The last region added will always have priority. If a newer region completely covers a previous region, the latter is not accessible. If you want a background region you should therefore always make this first.

How can I make a non-refering region?
If you want a non-refering region inside another region (like the background), type the word
nohrefinstead of the refering URL. When a user clicks in such a region, nothing happens. -
Which browsers can show imagemaps?
Most newer web-browsers can display imagemaps. In particular, version 2.0 and newer of Netscape and Internet Explorer are imagemap compatible.
